Poetry.

Aww... I thought this was gonna be about Pokemon. Still interesting though. ToS was the only tales I've ever touched, but I liked what little I saw. Sucks that the sequel can set you off like that.

And to think this is the short version.

TOS2 probably could have been a good game if they had cut off the connections to TOS. In other words, make it a different series. Cause basically, what they did was use the success of the first TOS to sell a product. That's all TOS2 was. A way of making more money off a great series. Or I should say a great game.

In TOS, every single character went through their own personal development and faced their own trials and flaws within themselves.

Zelos: I don't even have to go into this one. Zelos probably has the most amount of depth out of all the characters in the fucking game. Just do his Flanoir scene and you'll see what I mean.

Sheena: Sheena goes through her own development with the Volt issue. At first she blames herself completely, and it ends up costing her the life of someone truly precious to her. After that she still faces the issue with Kuchinawa, but at the end resolves it by showing that while she did cause those deaths, she can't continue to blame herself for it and tries to move on and bear that burden.

Regal: I actually thought Regal got more screentime in TOS2 then in TOS. But then I realized that doesn't mean he had more development. Regal goes through similar troubles that Sheena does, where he blames himself for a crime he had to commit. His entire character is about redemtion and self-loathing and in the end he allows himself to move on from his self-punisment.

Presea: Presea deals with the identity of herself and her own mortality. After she starts aging again, she starts worrying about her own death, which Lloyd helps her through. She also has a deep relationship with Regal, and ends up fighting the instinct to get revenge over trying to take the higher route and see that Regal is suffering enough as is. Plus it's not what her sister would want.

Genis: Genis deals with his own ineptitude. He's a super awesome mage, but he's feeble in his physical abilities and his mental aptitude. What I mean by this is that he feels fear. The kid's only like 9 and he's killed enough people to populate a nation, all of whom are trying to kill him. The kid faces his own death every day. This isn't to mention the whole racism, guilt for marble's death, and multitudes of other emotional developments.

Raine: Mother issues. Nuff said. There's plenty more, but the mother issue is all I need to say.

Kratos: Well, he has the guilt, like Regal, of killing the one he loved hanging over him for about 20 years. Plus, during the game, he's fighting people he cares dearly for, while helping his best friend who's trying to kill them. He has to make a terrible sacrifice whichever side he chooses. His friend, or his kin.

Lloyd: Lloyd is you. Pretty much. Everything you discover, it's when Lloyd discovers it. Call me thick, but the entire time till I was told that the Renegades were seperate from the Desians, I thought they were Desians. Still, that's a poor example. Lloyd is a hero we can relate to, and his philosophy on life is so positive that it completely killed any desire for suicide that I would ever have. He goes through his own development, doubting himself at points, but even at his lowest, he still tries his hardest.

Collette: I was saving this one for last, cause it's well known that I hate Collette. But honestly, the reason for my hate is rather petty. She's still a depthful character, who while portraying a facade of happiness and positive attitude, she feels guilt of letting down an entire world to save her own life, she feels inability in her own actions, and she has to deal with the fact that her lover will inevitably pick Sheena, a much better woman than her, over herself. But at least she still has Zelos.


TOS2 Characters:

Emil: Pretty much a Naruto ripoff, but more whiny. I'm not even sure that's entirely plausable, but compared to Lloyd, Emil is completely lackluster. Lloyd was pretty tough, so a lot of us soft gamer types who don't go out into the sun might relate more to Emil, but the fucker is so down on himself that it's impossible to like him at all. You can best describe him like this: In TOS2, Richter says: "Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality." and it's a phrase that Emil repeats to the point that it makes me projectile vomit on the screen. In the first 5 minutes of the game he says it about 6 times. Emil is the type of character that needs that kind of line to get him through each battle. Meanwhile Lloyd will have cut down about 8 desians in the time Emil takes to say the first three words.
Emil doesn't develop. He spends the entire game in the same place till the very end. And by that point if you're still playing you won't be able to take it anymore.

Marta: Out of all the new characters, Marta is the one I can actually take. Well, if I had to pick one of them that I could take, it would be Marta. She's completely unlikeable person and a complete fangirl of Emil (The fangirl is bad enough, but of fucking Emil of all people? At least pick someone more masculine. Like....anyone else in that world.) and she's overbearing to say the least. However, she does develop during the story. She learns about herself and learns about how she can't be greedy, and her fangirlism of Emil actually does turn into genuine feelings. She's not the most original character, but she's more than 1 dimension. If you asked me what they should do with Marta, I would say put her as a main character in a Tales game, but NOT the female love interest. I can imagine Marta in the first TOS game, the only one from TOS2, but as a bit role. Someone who would fawn over every new male to enter the party. First she'd go for Lloyd, then she'd go for Zelos, then she'd go for Regal, and as she developed she would realize that her overreactive libido was due to daddy never loving her or something. I could imagine her in the game, but not as the female main.

Tenebre: Tenebre I'm convinced was an attempt to recapture the magic of Jade. In TOtA, Jade was a shining light in a pit of shit. He was the one person you could relate to, because everyone else was annoying as shit and he was the only one aware of it. he would make a sarcastic quip, make fun of what they were doing, and be a general pessimist about everything. He also had a knowledge of what was going on at pretty much all times. Tenebre was Jade 'reborn'. Cept he wasn't. He's an artificial....thing, made to try and milk more from the series. The same elements were there as there was with Jade, but Tenebre was so fake that it ruined any sort of Jade-like magic. So we got stuck with this, and the only thing the player had to keep them going was the hope that an old cast member would show up soon.

Richter: Kratos ripoff. I seriously thought that he was actually Kratos in disguise, or in a younger form. I meal, Emil looked like Mithos, maybe his old friend was Mithos that was now Emil. Turns out it wasn't Kratos, and good thing too, cause Richter sucks. A bland villian, without any real purpose to be a villian other than his lover had died and was reborn. I dunno.

So that's just the characters. I'd get into details about the story, but the characters themselves took an hour for me to write. The story in TOS was amazing, the entire first part of the game could have been it's own game, and then puches you in the face with an epic twist that made you feel like everything you did was for jack shit, and then you went on a quest to REALLY save the world.

TOS2 ruins the complete magic of the TOS world. They re-visit old dungeons and people and build upon them in awful ways. And the story sounds ridiculous. TOS used Norse Mythology as a sort of jumping off point to reference every now and then, while having it's own thing. TOS2 blatantly rips off Norse mythology and stamps it's own licensing on it and sells it for 60 bucks a game.

The combat in TOS2 was better. But only if you were either Marta or Emil. Cause the TOS cast got gyped. And the playover bonus was complete BALLS.
