It's funny how today you can turn anything into an insult by sticking "tard" at the end of it. "Narutard," "Lulutard" and "consoletard" for example. Now I'm not talking about people who prefer one genre of games to another or even just one genre, that's fine with me. I mean the people who treat their preferred genre like some kind of superior Aryan race that all other genres should cower in fear of and all fans should bow in reverence to.
Let's back up a bit to explain how I got to this. One of m guilty pleasures is digging through forums to see how the members acted in a time before mine. Now as a fan of Final Fantasy I'm no stranger to division amongst fans and I'm cynical enough to predict that there'd be animosity between genres. But WOW, these guys are somethin' else! These mainly coe in two categories: The kinds that put their favorite genre on ridiculous pedestals and the guys who would rather take a pedestal and bludgeon their least favorite.

-Amazing characters. Besides Yukiko who sucks ass, all the characters in this game are lovable, hilarious, badass and outright FUCKING WIN.

Yukiko, is the obligatory healer of the team. And the 1st dungeon you tackle. When you first meet her at the beginning its like "Oh look, a beautiful girl who's polite and friends with chie." Yeah. Sure. Then you confront her shadow. And her shadow is like(the shadow IS the person, and says their true thoughts they hide cuz they're humiliating) "OH IM A LAZY BITCH WHO JUST WANTS TO NOT DO ANYTHING AND HAVE A MAN TAKE ME AWAY AND TAKE CARE OF ME!" In short:IM A PATHETIC BITCH!!!!!!!!1!11!

After that I was like "Well she's only 17, she still has time to grow"

GOOD GOD WAS I WRONG.

She becomes more of a bitch as the game progresses. And she's two faced. She always goes like "OMGWTF SEXUAL STUFF!?" first out of everyone, prime example is when Chie tells yosuke to ask her to tutor him and chie says "Just ask for a private lesson in studying" and Yosuke replies "Huh, private lesson huh?" and Yukiko (bitch) for some reason INSTANTLY thinks "SEX" and slaps yosuke, when neither he or chie meant anything of the sort. Yosuke then replies "WHAT THE HELL DID I DO!?" and all she has is "Oh sorry I just........"
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIITCH.

And the Slinks, when you get to find out character's backstories are amazing, and they reveal a new side to the characters that you wouldnt know about otherwise.

EXCEPT YUKIKO.

Shes the exact same thing as her shadow incident. All the others are like "MY TRAGIC PAST" or some shit, but Yukiko is "BAWWWWWW I WANNA LEAVE INABA I DUN WANNA INHERIT THE INN!"

As soon as i saw this, i said "Just watch. As soon as i max her out, shes gonna say "I've decided to stay in inaba and inherit the inn."

AND SHE DOES. WORD. FOR. WORD.

I WONDER WHO THE BETTER HEALER IS. I THINK ITS THE ONE WHO CAN DODGE HIS OWN MOTHERFUCKING WEAKNESS.

I got gameover on the EASIEST BOSS IN THE DAMN GAME (no not shadow yosuke you dont have yukisuck at this point) thanks to yukiko! FUCKING NAOTO. Her shadow is so ridiculously easy that I fought her with souji and yosuke only and raped her. My most recent file, I used yukiko instead of teddie (MISTAKE NO.1) Here's how the fight went.

Naoto:BUFUDYNE
Yukiko:I GOT HIT BY WEAKNESS.
Naoto:Blow entire party up.
Yukiko:IM DEAD
Chie:Kick naoto in the face
Souji:Revive yukiko and heal party
Yosuke:Be jesus and stuff
Naoto:BUFUDYNE
Yukiko:IM DEAD

Repeat. Thanks to yukio, Naoto continuously got extra turns, and was able to wear out EVEN YOSUKE AND CHIE enough to the point where they died.

WITH ROPE IN HAND I AM HAKUMEN. MY END HAS COME. BECAUSE YUKIKO.

When enemies attack with teddie's weak element, all i ever hear is:

Final thoughts:
This is really not a big issue and not only because it's about video games and therefore not actually significant. In the long run nothing actually matters SO I'M GOING TO COMPLAIN ABOUT WHATEVER I WANT

Swords actually are kinda cool. They're symbolic and stuff too.
But every time I see a white teenage male RPG lead holding a sword, a part of me dies.

Fighting style is a very important part of a character. And if you've got a sword you're INSTANTLY going into the "ANOTHER sword guy" pile until you've proven yourself to be otherwise.
Few have managed to do so.

Alright, Tales of Legendia, GASP MAIN CHARACTER USES HIS FISTS, try some games before you condemn the whole series, Tales of Vesperia, Yuri and use his fists, yes yes Yuri's only use of fists is in his artes woo still hes using his WHOLE body as a weapon really sword or axe is just an extension, and axes and you know what some of his axes are better cause they do TWO forms of damage, smashing and slash, two FS bars are being lowered rather than one GASP.

I'm not doin' a huge cataclysmic attack on Final Fantasy am I? That would not be cool I am only sayin they have a cliche in them sometimes.
Final Fantasy does good, the main characters' weapons seem to come CLOSE to swords but aren't (gunblade, whatever the heck Zidane uses I played that game for a long time and still don't know).
Also I actually did play XII but it doesn't really count so you are basically right.

This game is the bane of my existence.
It's like it was designed by Satan and programmed by Hitler for the sole purpose of fucking me up.

I love everything about it.
Characters, stages, graphics, music, storyline, game mechanics...
All of it. It's amazing.
Yeah, if you disregard the story, even Hakumen is cool. He's got a pro outfit and pro special attacks (and that Astral Heat man, it's a good one). And "Try harder next time" is a hilarious victory line.

The problem, of course, is when I try to actually play it.

Yeah, I suck at it.
So what? If I play it for long enough, I'll get better at it over time.
But...
The whole point's to fight other players, right? Not to mention, the online system apparently has me fighting opponents at my own skill level.

So I start up the online mode and proceed to lose over and over and over and over again.
Often because of stupid mistakes like getting easy combinations wrong.
Or by being repeatedly combo'd and unable to do anything...
Or with an gigantic special attack (see: Tager)...
Or worst of all, at the end of a close match. I lose a lot of close matches, but I don't appear to win any.

Yeah but I can handle a few losses, right? Yeah, I can...for the most part.
I already hate losing. But it happens, and it's easy to get over it.
Getting over a big string of losses like the ones described above?
Not as much.
It pretty much destroys me completely. And then I am depressed and drained of all energy for the rest of the day.
This is a character flaw and not much can be done about it...but who could put up with all that on a regular basis?

Also, once I start playing it, I am unable to stop. That's partly because the game is so good, but mostly because even the slightest win will completely revitalize me (It feels like I'm actually starved of winning, if that's possible).
So then I keep playing, and will continue until the gap between wins gets too wide and my spirit is crushed.

I have a special word for the feeling I get when I'm in a game that I can't quit and am obviously about to lose horribly.
It's "agony".
It's like falling very, very slowly down a hole with a bunch of spikes at the bottom. Nothing you do will have any effect on the outcome. All you can do is watch as the spikes get closer, second by second...
Example: In the first round my opponent combos me into oblivion. REBEL 2 ACTION
That example happens all the time. And my incomplete games counter still reads zero.

Easy solution, though! All I have to do is not play the game!
Playing it causes me lots of pesky emotional trauma, so I shouldn't be playing it. Simple.

There's a problem with this, though. Can you find it?
Scroll up and look around the part where it says "I love everything about it". It's in that area.
This is an amazing game...and I can't play it cause it's actually bad for my health.

Well, maybe there's some other way to get better besides playing it.

But there are some things I can do!
Like practice combos!

But practicing combos:
1. Isn't fun.
2. Can still be failed at.

I spent a long time practicing using a Distortion in the opposite direction from how it's usually done (IT'S JUST TWO QUARTER CIRCLES COME ON).
I could never pull it off consistently.
And it still doesn't work during fights...
If I can't even do quarter circles correctly then how the hell am I supposed to do anything harder than that?

Note: I have never trained in a fighting game before this one. And I have owned quite a few fighting games over the years.
The fact that I did so just shows how much I really wanted to improve.

I was actually going to go to a training session one time...which I missed cause I had a lot of stuff to do that day. Which almost never happens.

I'll win at online mode some more. That's basically it.
And then I'll get stronger and stronger opponents.

I don't think I'd take it so hard if I played a real person instead of anonymous online people.
Except...everyone I know who actually owns the thing outstrips my level of skill so far that it would take weeks to catch up with any of them.
Weeks of online mode. That'd put me in a coma at the very least.
Meanwhile they're improving even more.

There are some lurking issues with the game that detract from the experience EVEN MORE.

Like this: The five main characters are also very popular, and also appear to be some of the best fighters, as well.
And four out of five of them suck.
In fact, those four are the ONLY bad characters in THE ENTIRE GAME.
HOW CAN THAT BE POSSIBLE

HOW. IS. THIS. POSSIBLE!?!?!?
WHAT THE HELL ARE THE ODDS OF THIS HAPPENING
ONLY FOUR BAD CHARACTERS IN THE ENTIRE GAME AND THEY'RE ALL MAIN CHARACTERS

Okay so that's just my personal opinion and it can be safely ignored. THAT'S COMPLETELY FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE ALL FOUR OF THEM AISUFHOWBEGW

The good citizens of online mode, as if beating the crap of of me personally wasn't enough, they also play as those five in overwhelming numbers, skip the cool intros and the opponent's victories almost without exception, and frequently turn the Japanese voices on (WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT IT'S THE SAME AS TURNING THE VOICES OFF IF THE GAME DEVELOPERS ARE ADDING ALL THIS BONUS DIALOGUE FOR SPECIFIC CHARACTER MATCHUPS THEN WHY WOULD YOU GO AND TURN IT ALL OFF WHYYYYY).

But all of those are justifiable. If you want to get to the fight more quickly, or have seen the intros a billion times, you'd skip them.
And people ought to be able to play as whoever they want. It doesn't matter now what happens I will never that much, really. I'm too hard on those four previously mentioned characters, anyway. If I think about it really carefully...NONE of those four are bad. I do exaggerate a lot though.
And having Japanese voices on is perfectly fine if you understand/are Japanese, or don't want to hear a character's English voice for some reason, or...or if you just...think...it sounds...better

So uh personal opinion and this can be ignored too.

So it all comes down to this:
Blazblue is incredibly good and I can't (or shouldn't) play it.

Just THINKING about going back online fills me with dread. Why would I even consider playing it any more? It causes nothing but lost time and a dark feeling in the heart.

But I can't stop

Right now I can hear a loud voice in my head going "ALL RIGHT PULL UP THE DUSTLOOP FORUMS AND START TRAINING MODE WE'RE GOING TO PRACTICE COMBOS COME ON DO IT RIGHT NOW HURRY UP"

When all the evidence makes it clear that I need to take my copy of the game and launch it directly into the sun. Like, now.

My desire to play Blazblue is EXACTLY AS STRONG as the desire to never play it ever again.
To put it mildly: This conflict does not feel very good
And for that reason I wish the game never existed.

Just THINKING about it makes me instantly depressed.
Cause whenever I do, I hear that one line again in my head...
Usually it goes like, "Blazblue is amazing and you'll never stop sucking at it"

Well, the answer is obvious. I just have to stop thinking about Blazblue!

Okay, it might sound impossible, but I think I can pu_ it off.
